ISO 17025 training

What is ISO/IEC 17025

ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard defining the general requirements for the competence, impartiality, and consistent operation of laboratories that perform testing, calibration, or sampling. The standard ensures that laboratories are technically competent and able to produce precise, accurate results that are accepted and recognized globally. The standard covers both management system requirements (document control, management review, internal audits, etc.) and technical requirements (process competence, calibration, measurement uncertainty, environmental conditions, etc.).

Types of ISO 17025 Training

Training around ISO 17025 generally comes in several levels. The foundational or awareness courses introduce the structure and clauses of the standard, explain its scope, and help participants understand how it applies to testing and calibration laboratories. More advanced courses go deeper into implementing the standard, developing laboratory management systems, measurement uncertainty, validation or verification of methods, calibration of equipment, resource management, and ensuring compliance in technical and operational practices. There are also internal auditor training courses which focus on planning, conducting, reporting, and following up internal audits of laboratory management systems under ISO 17025. Some providers also offer lead implementer or lead auditor courses, aimed at professionals who will lead or manage ISO 17025 implementation or external audits.

What ISO 17025 Training Looks Like

Courses typically span one to several days depending on depth and level. A foundation or awareness session might be one day or even a half-day, while implementation or internal auditor courses might take two to three days. Lead auditor or lead implementer courses often take longer (4-5 days or more). Training sessions usually combine theoretical content (standard clauses, quality management system principles, technical competence, risk-based thinking) with practical exercises, case studies, workshops, and mock audits. Trainers often include experienced auditors or laboratory management specialists. Assessments (exams or quizzes) are common, and participants receive certificates of completion or competence.

Benefits of Undertaking ISO 17025 Training

Undertaking ISO 17025 training helps laboratory personnel, quality managers, and technical staff gain a clear understanding of the standard, enabling them to meet accreditation requirements, reduce errors, improve measurement reliability, and increase confidence in test/calibration results. It also helps labs prepare for audits (internal or external), maintain consistency, improve customer confidence, and often helps reduce rework or nonconformities. For individuals, it’s a credential that enhances their professional competence in quality management and technical laboratory practice.

Things to Consider

When selecting a ISO 17025 training course, check whether the provider is reputable, whether trainers are experienced in both technical and management aspects of laboratory systems, whether the course includes hands-on or case study work, and whether certificate awarded is recognized / accepted by accreditation bodies if you are aiming for LAB accreditation. Also evaluate the cost, duration, and the mode of delivery (onsite classroom vs virtual vs blended).
